About
On February 3rd, 1924, eighty-seven women of Italian heritage in the Trail community responded to an offer from the Società di M.S. Cristoforo Colombo, to create a constitution, and form a benevolent society for Italian women. It would be a source of friendship, respect, helpfulness and education.
That evening the Società Sorelle Colombo was founded, and soon was providing financial assistance for its members during times of illness, accident, and death. The lodge also provided a place for the women to socialize, and maintain their culture, their traditions, and their language.
Over the decades, the membership has become more proactive in raising funds and adjusted their benevolence to meet the changing times. The Sorelle continues to provide the original benefits but has added high school scholarships as well as donating to many charities that support health, women, and children.
Today, as in the past, numerous Sorelle members volunteer with other organizations throughout the Greater Trail Community. Our members and guests still enjoy Italian traditions at meetings and social activities. The present enrolment of approximately 350 is multi-generational. Student members as young as 15 connect with Honorary members, who are in their 80s and 90s, along with women of every age.
